A Week of Patterns

This week, we looked at the patterns that make up our lives. Zeynep being Zeynep, I’ve found her to be a massive source of inspiration these past two themes, given her love for patterns, colour, and texture.

I decided to look at my week in two ways: what textures and patterns made up the visual palette of my surroundings, and what were the differences between spaces I considered to be “productive” spaces, and spaces I considered to be “home-y” spaces.

Made up of quilt of pattern samples within a 3x3 dot grid, I recorded every pattern and texture I could find, from pillows and rugs to the tile patterns and environmental graphics at the office. Organized in quadrants, the vertical left-right halves mapped out linear patterns vs complex geometric/rounded patterns (respectively). On the horizontal, the top-half represented my office, and the bottom-half represented my home.

My original guess was that more rounded, complex, and intricate patterns would make up my home environment, while more grid-like and structured patterns would be more prominent at the office. I work in the Financial District, so it was a fair assumption that, although I find my aesthetic in general to be fairly minimal, a more reserved and simple palette would be found at the office.

Interestingly, I found it to be a bit of a relatively even split — probably the reason why I don’t see my job as monotonous as other offices. In fact, there were more grid-like patterns at my apartment, than at the office. However, there were more patterns in general at home, so maybe Zeynep’s love for textiles and patterns are really rubbing off on me…
