In death(.....狀況), Saudi writer's mild(溫和) calls for(呼籲) reform(改革) grew into (逐漸變成)a defiant(對抗) shout(呼喊)

When he began his self-imposed (自己決定的)exile(流放) to Washington last year, Jamal Khashoggi described himself simply as one "independent(獨立) journalist using his pen for the good (利益,好處)

of his country(國家利益)." With his brutal (野蠻的,殘忍的killing in Turkey this month, the Saudi (沙特)journalist became much more: the Arab world's symbol (象徵)for the cause (事業,目標)of free expression(言論自由).

In their effort(努力,試圖) to silence(安靜,閉嘴) the 59-year-old writer, Saudi officials eliminated(抹掉,謀殺) a domestic(國內) nuisance(麻煩的人或物) who had angered(激怒) the country's de facto(事實上的) ruler(統治者), Crown Prince (王儲)Mohammed bin Salman. After two weeks of denials(否認), the Saudi government acknowledged(承認)

early Saturday(週六) that Khashoggi had died violently(激烈的) inside the country's diplomatic consulate(外交領事館) in Istanbul.

Khashoggi moved easily within the highest circles(圈子,階層) of Saudi politics. He was a strident (強硬的)critic of Islamist extremism(伊斯蘭極端主義), and he spent his later years(晚年championing (支援某物,為某物做鬥爭)liberal causes(自由事業) such as women's rights and freedom of expression in Muslim societies. He considered himself to be a fierce (狂熱的)Saudi patriot(愛國主義者), friends say.

Some Arab dissidents (持不同政見者)distrusted him because of his close ties with senior government officials. But over time(時境過遷), it was the Saudi establishment that turned on (+人 突然發動攻擊)he journalist, moving first to shut down his publishing platforms in the Arab peninsula, and then to crush (粉碎,鎮壓)him.
(move to do  採取行動做某事)

Ironically(諷刺的是), Khashoggi had never sought (seek)to be a disrupter(擾亂的人) and instead, had been an advocate (倡導,擁護)for modest(適度的) reform within the system. He argued(提出) simply that his fellow (同類的,夥伴的)Arabs deserved (應得)the "right to speak their minds without fear of imprisonment(監禁)," as he wrote in a Washington Post column in April.
seek to do 試圖做某事

"In killing him, it's like they killed more than a man," said Maggie Mitchell Salem, a former (前任的)State Department official. "They killed a vision(構想,想象) of what Arab media and society could be like."
