Android App Prototype Using Google Docs Drawing

android app prototype

An android app prototype can be helpful when you want to build your next android app. Often, jumping straight to code is not the best thing to do, regardless of your experience developing applications. That being said however, sometimes the cost of prototyping tools is out of reach for many starting developers. Before Photoshop started offering their software for a monthly fee, you had to pay a huge amount to get it. If you do not want to pay that much money, Google Docs Drawing tool is your friend. All you need is creativity and time.

I am not trying to show you how to create an android app prototype in this post. Instead, I am going to share with you some examples that I created over the weekend while listening to classics on Songza and watching some television. I hope this will inspire you to create awesome android app prototypes for your next great app that you also promise to share a link with me.

Android App Prototype – FlipIt Android App

While prototyping my make-shift android app (FlipIt), I figured since I didn’t have any fancy prototyping tools – which most often require a learning curve, I could open Google Docs Drawing software. After all, they are just tools – it is one of those things you hear people say : if you left a hammer next to a nail, it wouldn’t just do the job. Look, whether someone said that or not, you get the idea. So here is my first set of images showing the android app prototype.

Before I show you the next set of my android app prototype, I would like to mention the fact that having one stands as a guide. When you start writing your code, you look back and check to see if you are following your initial prototype. Isn’t that how cars (everything else) are made? You cannot have a Honda mold (prototype) with two doors and end up with a Honda car with four doors. So, you will always use the prototype as a map that leads you towards your final app. So here is my next set of images.

Android App Prototype – Summary

By simply looking at my android app prototype above, you probably had an easy time figuring out what the app does. It might be the simplest app you have ever seen but it has several steps illustrated by the mockups.

Using Google Docs Drawing software made it possible to create the above prototype – within a very short period of time. I was simply playing with it. Just imagine what you could do with enough time and higher skill level than me? You can do some serious damage to paid-for prototyping tools out there. You really don’t have to, I mean, you have better apps to build!

In general, I hope you were inspired to create your first android app prototype using the simplest tools available to you for free. Good luck and please share your own prototyping tools and even what you have created. I would love to share with my awesome readers here if you want.
