Ask HN: Dealing with anxiety and depression

I've had bouts of depression and anxiety. Each time it comes in waves and I try and find different outlets to mitigate the effects. I've tried working out, changing my eating habits, code therapy, therapy, going out in nature, trying a new skill, reading, or taking a class. Being married and having a toddler makes things difficult in some ways (I imagine other married parents can sympathize) and easier in others. It can
be easier at times because when that toddler isn't being difficult and sees you and immediately gives you a hug your world feels better (even if for a moment).

As an engineer, I often think it would be nice to just monitor what is happening so I can take the proper measures to mitigate the effects. Sometimes the anxiety and depression can be so overwhelming that it makes actual work slow down, motivation begins to wane and you sort of collapse. I wish there was a way to know what exactly could be measured and what that measurement would look like, what things I am doing that help mitigate the effects.

Self-introspection helps me, but I am curious what other people do to be effective, less distracted, less anxious. Are there morning routines you adhere to that have helped? Night routines? Weekly routines? What have you found that works for you?
